Why do three women from Latino backgrounds use the word CHISME?

Often times, women are seen together at a restaurant or at the office drinking coffee, and their male counterparts or even other women tend to think they are gossiping.  In reality, their conversations may have been regarding education, community events, politics, job, or children.

Latinas typically don't use the word "gossip", however, they use a particular word, "chisme". “it was only chisme”.    Most women meet their friends at home, family gatherings and at the office; most frequently, coffee is served.  When it comes to coffee time, Latinas seem to find that extra opportunity to serve up a little “chisme”.
